Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide which event(s) I want to do?

1 - Ask! Look up your coach/captain contact information and reach out with questions.

2 - Watch the exemplar videos on the Competitor Info page of this website.

3 - Attend a practice session. The practice schedule is posted on the website, reach out to ask if you can attend to see the events that will be practiced there/then.

What are the accounts I will need to set up?

You will need a Speechwire account, an NSDA account, and a Tabroom account. It is easiest if all of them use the same email address. Please visit and register, if possible, on the following websites:

Why am I asked to bring a judge to every competition?

In order to run a tournament, a judge is needed in every room of 2-6 people. Schools that attend tournaments have a required number of judges to bring, based on the number of entries they are bringing to the tournament. Often, it’s 1 judge for every 2 debate entries and 1 judge for every 5 speech entries. If we don’t bring the required number of judges, we are unable to participate in sweepstakes at the end of the tournament and we risk causing the tournament to run behind.

What are NSDA points and how do I earn them?

NSDA is actually an honor society - much like NHS! In our organization, you earn merit points based on how well you perform at competitions, primarily!

What is the difference between Sectionals and Districts?

Sectionals is our tournament that qualifies us for State.

Districts is our tournament that qualifies us for Nationals.

Speech is different from other sports - our state and national tournaments are completely separate. Notice how we are members of both ISSDA and NSDA? They are separate organizations with separate levels of recognition and competition.
